The Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, has confirmed the abduction of seven farmers in Itaogbolu, located in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Amotekun Corps Commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed the incident during a phone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday. According to him, the victims were kidnapped on Saturday, and operatives have since been deployed to the surrounding forests in an ongoing search-and-rescue operation.

“I can confirm the incident. Our men are currently in the forest and remain on the trail of the abductors,” Adeleye stated. “I visited the area yesterday [Sunday] and we are optimistic about securing their release soon.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olushola Ayanlade, also confirmed the incident and said the police have launched a manhunt to track down the perpetrators.

“There was a kidnapping incident over the weekend in Itaogbolu, and we have commenced operations to apprehend those responsible,” Ayanlade said. “Although I cannot confirm the exact number of victims at the moment, efforts are in progress to ensure their safe return.”

Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the kidnappers have contacted the victims’ families, demanding a ransom of N100 million.

“The victims were abducted while harvesting palm fruits on Saturday,” one source, who requested anonymity, told NAN. “We didn’t hear anything until Sunday evening when the kidnappers reached out to one of the families, demanding N100 million. Negotiations are ongoing.”

Authorities continue to intensify efforts to locate and rescue the abducted farmers.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
