SERAP, LAWYER DEMAND WITHDRAWAL OF SOWORE CHARGES

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project and a lawyer representing activist Omoyele Sowore have called on the Department of State Services to withdraw the charges against him.

The demand follows the DSS’s continued legal action involving Sowore, with SERAP and his lawyer questioning the basis for the charges.

SERAP said the continued prosecution raises concerns about the protection of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful participation in public affairs.

The organisation urged the security agency to discontinue the case and ensure that Sowore’s rights are respected in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution and relevant laws.

Sowore’s lawyer also called on the DSS to withdraw the charges, arguing that the case should not be used to restrict the activist’s lawful activities.

The development has attracted attention from rights groups and other civil society organisations, particularly because of Sowore’s history of activism and criticism of government policies.

SERAP urged the authorities to resolve the matter through lawful and transparent means and avoid actions that could undermine public confidence in the justice system.

The organisation also called on government agencies to respect due process when dealing with citizens accused of offences.
