SENIOR BOLIVIAN MAGISTRATE KILLED IN TAXI SHOOTING
A senior Bolivian judge, Victor Hugo Claure, has been shot dead by gunmen while travelling in a taxi in the city of Santa Cruz.
Police said the attack occurred on Thursday night when two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on the vehicle carrying the judge.
Claure, who served as the most senior magistrate on Bolivia’s highest agro-environmental court, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died before reaching the hospital.
Authorities said the motive for the killing is still under investigation, although initial findings suggest it may be linked to a land dispute.
The United Nations in Bolivia condemned the attack and called for a swift and thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Following the incident, security has been strengthened for other senior judicial officials, with protection increased for at least 13 magistrates.
Prosecutors said they have obtained video footage of the attack and statements from witnesses who were in the taxi at the time of the shooting.
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
