SENEGAL UNIVERSITY STUDENT DIES AFTER PROTEST CLASHES WITH POLICE
A student has died following clashes between police and students protesting delays in stipend payments at a university in Senegal, the country’s government confirmed on Tuesday.
The unrest occurred on Monday at Sheikh Anta Diop University in the capital, Dakar, according to an official statement.
Government spokespersons said the victim, identified as Abdoulaye Ba, was a second-year medical student. He reportedly died as a result of the clashes that broke out during the protest.
The confrontation followed demonstrations by students who had gathered to demand the payment of outstanding stipends, an issue that has triggered repeated tensions across Senegal’s higher institutions in recent months.]
Authorities did not immediately release further details on the circumstances surrounding Ba’s death or whether arrests were made during the incident.
Protests over unpaid stipends have erupted sporadically at several Senegalese universities in recent months, as students continue to press the government over delays in financial support meant to cover basic living and academic expenses.
