Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) has refuted claims that the early endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its affiliates is driven by fear of potential opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday, the former Abia State Governor asserted that the APC, as the ruling party, is confident in its performance and unshaken by the activities of opposition parties.

“We are the ruling party. We are passionate about this country and committed to its development. Many of us are investing in industries and creating jobs beyond government roles,” Kalu said.

“There is no fear. The opposition is expected to criticise—it’s part of their role. Our focus is on delivery, and I am confident Nigerians will come to appreciate President Tinubu’s achievements over time.”

Kalu, who now chairs the newly formed Senate Committee on the Southeast Development Commission, disclosed that the APC caucus from the Southeast had endorsed Tinubu even before the national declaration.

“Just look at my outfit—it symbolizes support. The Southeast APC caucus, led by Governor Hope Uzodinma and co-chaired by Governor Francis Nwifuru and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, was the first to push for Tinubu’s endorsement,” he said.

On the state of the economy, Senator Kalu praised President Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as necessary though challenging.

“This is the first President to eliminate fuel subsidy and unify the exchange rate. Things are tough now because we’re adjusting to new realities. These are sacrifices we must make, and in two to three years, the benefits will become clear,” he explained.

President Tinubu’s administration has faced mounting criticism over the rising cost of living, but the government insists its reforms are aimed at long-term stability and growth.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
