SENATE QUERIES SEDC BOSS OVER ₦16.6BN BUDGET, DEMANDS DETAILED EXPLANATION
The Senate has questioned the management of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) over its proposed ₦16.6 billion budget, demanding a clear breakdown and justification of expenditure plans.
During the budget defence session, lawmakers expressed concerns over the structure of the spending plan, asking the commission to provide detailed explanations on key allocations, including administrative costs, capital projects, and operational expenses.
Senators insisted that all government agencies must demonstrate transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, especially at a time when Nigerians are facing economic challenges and increased scrutiny of government spending.
The SEDC leadership, while responding, defended the budget proposal, stating that the funds are intended to drive regional development, infrastructure projects, and institutional strengthening across the South-East zone.
However, lawmakers maintained that certain components of the budget appeared unclear and required further clarification before approval could be considered.
The session ended with the Senate directing the commission to submit additional documentation and appear for further review to address outstanding concerns.
As deliberations continue, the National Assembly has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that public funds are properly managed and aligned with national development priorities.
