The Senate has passed a bill establishing the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service, a specialized agency aimed at curbing illegal mining and enhancing security in mining areas nationwide.

The approval came after the Senate adopted the report of its Committee on Solid Minerals Development, chaired by Senator Ekong Samson, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

While presenting the report, Senator Samson explained that the proposed agency would “provide a structured framework to oversee mining operations, enforce environmental and safety regulations, and promote sustainable mining practices.”

Sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, the bill seeks to secure mining sites, regulate industry activities, and protect host communities affected by illegal mining operations.

Lawmakers who contributed to the debate hailed the creation of the Mines Rangers Service as a timely move to address the rising incidents of illegal mining and insecurity in resource-rich regions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, emphasized that the new service would strengthen existing mining regulations and restore order to the sector.

“When enacted, this bill will help safeguard our natural resources, create employment opportunities, and boost government revenue,” Akpabio said.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
