SDP PROMISES EQUAL REPRESENTATION FOR WOMEN AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS

The Social Democratic Party has pledged to give Nigerian women a 50 per cent share of political appointments and positions within the party if it wins the 2027 general elections.

The commitment was announced in Abuja as the party’s women leaders commenced nationwide mobilisation efforts ahead of the elections.

The SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, represented at the event by the South-South Deputy National Chairman, Senator Ugochukwu Uba, said greater participation by women would form a key part of the party’s political agenda.

Uba said the party’s forthcoming manifesto would contain specific measures designed to increase women’s participation in governance, decision-making and party administration.

He stressed that the proposed 50-50 representation would not merely be a campaign promise, but would extend to political appointments and the internal structures of the party.

According to him, the SDP is currently undergoing restructuring as it seeks to strengthen its grassroots structures and prepare effectively for the 2027 electoral contest.

The party leader also urged its women leaders to take the SDP’s message to communities and wards across the country, stressing the importance of grassroots mobilisation in determining the party’s electoral prospects.

The National Speaker of the SDP Women Parliament, Ambassador Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, said the mobilisation exercise was aimed at building an effective political structure capable of delivering electoral success.

She cautioned that winning the 2027 elections would require more than political aspirations, urging members to focus on organisation, mobilisation, strategy and sustained engagement with voters.

Abdullahi challenged women leaders to establish functional structures across states, local communities and wards, arguing that active grassroots participation would be critical to the party’s performance at the polls.

She urged women to move beyond simply attending political meetings and take greater responsibility for building the structures needed to strengthen the SDP.

She also called for unity among women within the party, warning that internal disagreements could weaken their collective influence and undermine efforts to expand the party’s grassroots presence.

Abdullahi commended women leaders who travelled to Abuja at their own expense, describing their commitment as evidence of their determination to contribute to the party’s growth.

The SDP said its forthcoming manifesto would provide further details on its proposed policies for women and other segments of society.

The party also said its political programme was rooted in the welfare objectives contained in Chapter Two of the Nigerian Constitution.

The meeting ended with a call for SDP women leaders to return to their respective states and commence immediate grassroots mobilisation as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
