SARAKI URGES NIGERIAN YOUTHS TO DEMAND BETTER GOVERNANCE
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has urged Nigerian youths to demand greater accountability, better opportunities and improved governance from elected leaders as the country marks its 66th Independence anniversary.
Saraki made the call in an Independence Day message on Thursday, saying young Nigerians who have grown up under democracy have the right to expect better outcomes in education, employment, security and other areas that affect their future.
The former Kwara State governor noted that Nigerians who experienced military rule viewed the return to democracy in 1999 as a major achievement. However, he said many younger Nigerians have never experienced military rule and therefore judge democracy by the improvements it delivers in their daily lives.
Saraki highlighted concerns among young Nigerians over completing their education, finding jobs, staying safe and having enough opportunities to build their lives without leaving the country.
He said asking such questions should not be seen as a lack of patriotism, arguing that demanding better conditions can also demonstrate a commitment to Nigeria's future.
The former Senate President urged youths to maintain high expectations of political candidates, ask important questions before elections and pay attention to the performance of elected officials after voting.
He also encouraged young Nigerians to remain involved in governance beyond election periods, saying civic participation should continue after elections.
Saraki said the 66th Independence anniversary should provide an opportunity for political leaders to reflect on their responsibilities to the younger generation and the opportunities available to them.
