Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged judges and lawyers to protect the independence and integrity of the judiciary, saying the justice system must remain strong beyond individual administrations and political cycles.

Sanwo-Olu made the call in a message delivered by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at a special service marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year of the Lagos State Judiciary.

The governor, whose administration is entering its final phase, said the occasion provided an opportunity to reflect not only on government achievements but also on the institutions being built for future generations.

He said public institutions should outlive the individuals who occupy political offices, adding that the judiciary must maintain its commitment to fairness, truth and independence regardless of changes in government.

Sanwo-Olu said an effective justice system was important to protecting citizens’ rights, resolving disputes, enforcing contracts and maintaining public confidence. He also linked the effectiveness of the judiciary to business, investment and wider economic activity in Lagos.

The governor assured the judiciary of continued government support for initiatives aimed at improving access to justice and strengthening the administration of justice, within the limits of the state’s constitutional responsibilities.

He, however, said infrastructure, technology and institutional reforms alone could not guarantee an effective justice system. According to him, its strength ultimately depends on the integrity, courage and fairness of those administering justice.

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, pledged that judges and magistrates would continue to uphold the rule of law and discharge their responsibilities diligently.

He also urged lawyers and members of the public with complaints against judicial officers to use the appropriate procedures, while encouraging constructive criticism that could contribute to improving the justice system.

The 2026/2027 Legal Year services brought together judicial officers, lawyers, government officials, religious leaders and other stakeholders in the justice sector.
