Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has honoured and rewarded members of Team Lagos for their remarkable performance at the 2025 National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, where they emerged overall champions for the first time in the history of the competition.
Team Lagos dethroned hosts and perennial winners, Delta State, after securing a total of 110 medals — 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze — at the ninth edition of the Games held last month.
During a special reception at the Lagos House in Ikeja on Friday, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced generous cash prizes for the athletes, coaches, and officials of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
Under the reward plan, each of the 41 individual gold medallists will receive ₦500,000, while pairs in team events will share the same amount. Larger team gold winners will take home ₦1 million.
For silver medals, 22 individual winners will receive ₦300,000 each, doubles teams will share ₦300,000, and team event winners will get ₦700,000.
Bronze medallists will also be rewarded — 19 individual winners will each get ₦250,000, doubles teams will share ₦250,000, while team event winners will receive ₦500,000.
In addition, the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission was awarded ₦25 million, and 61 coaches will each receive ₦300,000. Non-medallist athletes were also appreciated with ₦100,000 each for their participation and effort.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the athletes for their dedication and discipline, describing their victory as a landmark achievement for Lagos sports.
“This gesture is a token of appreciation for your commitment and success. To maintain this momentum, we’ll continue to provide modern facilities, a conducive environment, and quality equipment,” he said.
“You have written Lagos’ name in gold. Even the Governor of Delta State acknowledged that we have the best set of athletes in the country. We’ll keep supporting you to become national and international champions.”
The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his unwavering support and investment in youth and sports development, noting that Team Lagos’ success reflects the government’s long-term vision.
“This victory underscores the Governor’s dedication to empowering young people through sports. His continuous investment in facilities and athlete development has positioned Lagos as a leading hub for sporting excellence,” Fatodu stated.
