SANWO-OLU BACKS MERIT, COMPETENCE AS BASIS FOR APPOINTMENTS

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to using merit and competence as the primary criteria for appointments and promotions in the state’s public service.

Speaking during a recent government function, the Governor emphasised that selecting individuals based on ability and track record is essential for effective governance and service delivery to residents. He noted that the policy helps build a more efficient and result-oriented civil service.

Sanwo-Olu urged political leaders and appointees to prioritise competence over other considerations when making recommendations for public positions. He stressed that the state’s development goals require the best hands to drive implementation and achieve desired outcomes.

The Governor’s position has been welcomed by governance experts who believe that merit-based appointments can significantly improve public sector performance and reduce inefficiency. They called for transparent processes and continuous capacity building to support the policy.
