SAHARA POWER BEGINS $12M PLANT CONSTRUCTION TO BOOST LAGOS ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

Sahara Power Enterprise Group has commenced construction of a 12-megawatt Independent Power Plant in Ogba, Lagos State, as part of efforts to improve electricity supply to businesses, residential communities and public institutions in the area.

The project, valued at $12 million, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027 and will comprise six gas-fired generating units, each with a capacity of two megawatts.

The new plant is being developed at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric and is expected to provide a more reliable and cost-effective source of electricity to communities and commercial areas including Ogba, Acme Road and Wemco Road.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Enterprise Group, Kola Adesina, said the project demonstrated the company’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and providing dependable electricity to businesses and communities.

Adesina explained that better access to reliable electricity would help improve productivity, support economic growth and create opportunities for value creation across the affected areas.

He added that the facility would use modern gas-powered generation technology designed to meet established environmental, operational and safety standards.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electric, Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, described the project as an important investment towards improving the quality, reliability and sustainability of electricity supplied to customers within the company’s network.

She said the partnership with Sahara Power would provide a dependable and cost-effective electricity source while supporting businesses and economic activities within the designated communities.

Construction of the power plant will be handled by Cummins West Africa Limited. The company’s Managing Director, Mark Oni-Okeke, said the partnership would contribute to socio-economic development by expanding access to reliable and sustainable energy.

The project is part of Sahara Power’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity value chain and contribute to closing the country’s power supply gap.

The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, also welcomed the project, saying improved electricity supply would create a better environment for businesses, attract investments and support employment opportunities within the community.

Upon completion, the Ogba IPP is expected to provide additional electricity capacity to Lagos and improve the reliability of power supply for residents and businesses in the surrounding areas.
