Kenyan President William Ruto has toured the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Lagos, ahead of the planned groundbreaking of a new refinery project in Lamu, Kenya.

Ruto visited the facility on Friday at the invitation of Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote. The visit came days before the scheduled September 30 groundbreaking ceremony for the Dangote East African Refinery.

During the tour, Ruto described the Nigerian refinery as an example of what African governments, investors and financial institutions could achieve through collaboration. He said the facility has a crude refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and produces more than 100 million litres of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel daily.

Ruto said the planned Lamu refinery would be larger and would contribute to Kenya’s petroleum sector by improving fuel supply and supporting industrialisation.

According to the Kenyan President, the project is expected to create about 60,000 jobs when completed. He added that industries producing fertilisers, chemicals and packaging materials could also emerge around the refinery.

The proposed project is expected to have a refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day. Its development is part of Kenya’s efforts to strengthen energy security, increase local value addition and position the country as a regional industrial hub.
