ROONEY CALLS UNITED SQUAD ‘SELFISH BABIES’ AFTER FERNANDES CRITICISM
Wayne Rooney has criticised Manchester United’s players, accusing them of avoiding responsibility after captain Bruno Fernandes questioned manager Michael Carrick’s tactics.
The former United striker spoke following the club’s 4–1 Champions League defeat to Como, a result that increased pressure on Carrick.
Fernandes said United needed to be braver, while defender Lisandro Martinez had previously criticised the club’s transfer investment.
Speaking on The United Stand podcast, Rooney warned that public criticism from senior players could damage unity within the dressing room.
He argued that, regardless of disagreements over tactics or recruitment, players remained responsible for their performances.
“These players, they’re selfish,” Rooney said.
He also accused them of behaving “like babies” when unhappy, suggesting they were shifting blame rather than examining their own contributions.
Rooney, United’s all-time leading goalscorer and a former teammate of Carrick, urged the squad to show greater commitment to one another, the coaching staff and supporters.
United head into their Premier League meeting with Bournemouth without a victory in seven matches across all competitions.
They sit 13th in the league, leaving both the manager and his players under growing scrutiny.
