RIO FERDINAND BLASTS ARSENAL FANS FOR BACKLASH OVER NONI MADUEKE DEAL
Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has publicly called out a section of Arsenal fans over their harsh reaction to the club’s move for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.
Madueke, 23, is reportedly on the verge of joining the Gunners in a £52 million summer transfer, with both clubs said to have already agreed on the deal. However, what should have been a major career milestone for the young English forward has been marred by fan backlash online.
Some Arsenal supporters went as far as launching a #NOTOMADUEKE petition, voicing their disapproval of the signing even before it was officially announced.
Reacting strongly to the development, Rio Ferdinand took to social media
platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his disappointment.
“For a young 23-year-old English footballer to be vilified, bullied, and embarrassed at a time when he should be celebrating a dream move is an utter disgrace,” Ferdinand wrote.
He urged fans to think beyond football and consider how it must feel for Madueke and his family during what should be a proud moment.
“Put yourself in his shoes. Imagine how his parents must feel. He’s about to leave a rival and join a top club for £55 million — and instead of celebration, he’s being torn apart online,” Ferdinand added.
The football pundit also acknowledged that while fans have every right to disagree with club decisions, crossing the line into public shaming and petitions is unacceptable.
“Disagreeing is one thing, but actively trying to tear a player down before he’s even arrived? That’s beyond football — it’s bullying.”
Despite the criticism, Madueke’s move to Arsenal looks set to go ahead, with official confirmation expected soon.
As the transfer window heats up, Ferdinand’s comments serve as a reminder of the human side of the game — and the need for fans to show respect and empathy, especially when young players are involved.
