"Free Sowore Now" – Rights Group Tells Police Over Detention

A human rights group, De-Advocates for Justice Today, has strongly condemned the arrest and continued detention of activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, calling for his immediate and unconditional release.

In a statement released by the group’s President, Comrade Israel Joe, the group accused the police of acting unjustly by detaining Sowore over allegations of criminal defamation and forgery.

Joe questioned the integrity of the police’s actions, stating that the force cannot act as both the accuser and judge in a matter involving someone known for openly criticizing them.

“It is important to remind the police of the principle of natural justice – nemo judex in causa sua – meaning you cannot be a judge in your own case. What’s happening here is a clear violation of that,” he said.

The group also noted that Sowore’s consistent stance against police misconduct has earned him enemies within the force, which may be influencing the actions against him.

“Mr. Sowore has always spoken out against illegality and oppression, especially by the police. His activism has made him a target,” the statement added.

De-Advocates for Justice Today warned that failure to release Sowore could lead to mass protests at police headquarters in solidarity with the detained activist.

As of now, Sowore remains in police custody while public pressure for his release continues to grow.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
