RIC HASSANI EXPLAINS WHY GOSPEL ARTISTS SWITCH TO SECULAR MUSIC
Nigerian singer Ric Hassani has weighed in on the recurring trend of gospel musicians transitioning into secular music, stating that the move is often driven by a search for personal fulfilment rather than financial gain.
Speaking in a recent interview with Hip TV, Hassani revealed that he also began his music journey in the church but later realised that gospel music wasn’t his true calling.
“Gospel music requires more than just vocal talent—it’s a spiritual gift to be able to minister through song,” he said. “Not everyone has that. For instance, while someone like CeCe Winans is clearly gifted in that area, others may not be able to connect with the spiritual aspect in the same way.”
He further explained that although he identifies as a strong Christian and includes at least one gospel track in each of his albums, he believes his purpose lies outside the traditional gospel scene.
“I wasn't made to serve in the same way as artists like Frank Edwards or Mercy Chinwo,” Hassani said. “If I try to do church music full-time, it may not resonate. It’s simply not my lane.”
According to him, the assumption that artists switch to secular music for financial reasons is misguided. “Yes, everyone likes money. But true creatives are driven by the need to express themselves and find purpose. Even artists with great wealth, like Wizkid, Burna Boy, or Davido, continue making music—not just for money but for the fulfilment it brings.”
He concluded by emphasizing that the satisfaction of creating meaningful music often surpasses the rewards of financial success.
