RETIREES PROTEST, DEMAND ₦32,000 MINIMUM PENSION AND IMPROVED BENEFITS

A group of retirees has staged a protest, calling on the government to review and increase pension payments, including a demand for a minimum monthly pension of ₦32,000.

The protesters, made up of pensioners from various sectors, gathered peacefully to express frustration over what they described as inadequate and delayed pension benefits that have made life increasingly difficult for many retired workers.

They argued that the current pension structure is no longer sustainable due to rising inflation and the high cost of living, insisting that urgent reforms are needed to restore dignity to retirement life.

According to the retirees, many of their colleagues are struggling to afford basic necessities such as food, healthcare, and housing, despite years of public service. They urged authorities to prioritize pension payments and ensure regular and timely disbursement.

The group also called for better welfare packages and improved administrative efficiency in pension management systems to prevent delays and discrepancies in payments.

Some of the protesters appealed to labour unions and civil society organizations to join their advocacy, stressing that pension reform is a national issue affecting millions of families.

They warned that continued neglect of retirees’ welfare could lead to deeper social and economic hardship, especially among vulnerable elderly citizens.

Authorities are yet to issue an official response to the protest, but stakeholders say dialogue will be necessary to address the concerns raised and prevent further demonstrations.
