Retired Army Major From Kogi Dies In Kidnappers’ Custody Despite ₦10 Million Ransom Payment
A retired Army Major, Joe Ajayi, who was abducted from his home in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, has tragically died in captivity, even after a ₦10 million ransom was paid by his family in an attempt to secure his release.
The kidnapping occurred on the night of Wednesday, May 21, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., when armed men stormed his residence and opened fire indiscriminately before taking him away.
According to reports, the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦50 million, but prolonged negotiations ensued as the family struggled to raise the amount. During this period, Major Ajayi’s health reportedly declined due to lack of access to his medications.
Sources revealed that the abductors insisted the family would need to pay additional money to send his medication, a demand the family could not meet. As his condition worsened, the kidnappers eventually lowered their demand to ₦10 million. Believing he was still alive, the family promptly paid the reduced ransom. However, after the payment was made, the kidnappers directed them to a location—only for the family to discover his lifeless body.
His remains have since been deposited at the mortuary of Kabba Specialist Hospital.
The incident comes amid a rising wave of kidnappings in Kogi State. In a separate case, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the traditional ruler of Okoloke in Yagba West LGA, was also abducted from his home earlier in May and remains in captivity.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, addressing residents during Eid prayers in Okene, urged the public to remain calm, assuring that ongoing security efforts are beginning to yield results.
Major Joe Ajayi, aged 76, previously served as the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kabba/Bunu Chapter.
