Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasised that respect for human rights will be crucial to ensuring credible and peaceful elections in Nigeria in 2027.

Shettima made the remark while speaking at an event focused on governance, democracy, and the protection of fundamental freedoms. He noted that safeguarding citizens’ rights is essential for strengthening public trust in the electoral process.

According to him, credible elections cannot be achieved without guaranteeing the rights of citizens to participate freely in the democratic process.

The Vice President said protecting civil liberties, promoting justice, and ensuring fairness during elections would help deepen Nigeria’s democratic culture.

Shettima also called on relevant institutions, security agencies, and electoral stakeholders to remain committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting voters before, during, and after elections.

He stressed that respecting human rights would not only enhance the credibility of the electoral system but also promote peace and stability across the country.

Nigeria is expected to hold its next general elections in 2027, and stakeholders have continued to emphasise the need for reforms and improved electoral processes to strengthen the country’s democracy.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
