The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) has announced that its members will commence a nationwide strike starting Tuesday, citing unresolved issues with the federal government over welfare, salaries, and working conditions.

In a statement released on Monday, the association said the decision follows prolonged negotiations with the Federal Government of Nigeria, which it described as unsatisfactory and unfulfilled. NARD emphasized that the strike is a last resort after repeated calls for the government to address the concerns of resident doctors across public hospitals in the country.

The association highlighted issues including delayed salaries, poor housing allowances, inadequate medical facilities, and lack of promotion for resident doctors, warning that these challenges have affected their ability to provide optimal healthcare services.

NARD urged the federal and state governments to intervene urgently to prevent disruption in patient care and maintain stability in hospitals nationwide. The strike is expected to affect services in teaching hospitals, federal medical centers, and other public health institutions.

Officials called on patients to plan ahead for medical appointments, and asked government authorities to resume meaningful dialogue with the doctors to avert a prolonged industrial action.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
