REPS SEEK TOUGHER ACTION AGAINST FAKE, SUBSTANDARD FOOD PRODUCTS

The House of Representatives has called for tougher measures against the production and sale of fake and substandard food products in Nigeria, raising concerns about consumer safety and the growing threat posed by unsafe goods in the market.

The call reflects the need to strengthen efforts to protect Nigerians from food products that fail to meet approved quality and safety standards. Substandard food can expose consumers to health risks, undermine confidence in local markets and create unfair competition for businesses that comply with regulatory requirements.

Fake and poorly manufactured food products remain a concern for consumers who depend on packaged goods for their daily needs. Problems may include misleading labels, expired products, poor storage conditions, contaminated ingredients and the sale of items that do not meet the required standards.

For households already dealing with rising food prices, identifying genuine and safe products can be an additional challenge. Consumers may unknowingly purchase unsafe goods, particularly when packaging closely resembles that of trusted brands.

The lawmakers' position highlights the importance of effective monitoring, stronger enforcement and appropriate penalties for individuals and companies that deliberately violate food safety regulations. Regulatory agencies, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), play a key role in inspecting products, registering eligible goods and removing unsafe items from circulation.

Stronger action could also involve improved market surveillance, more frequent inspections, public awareness campaigns and better coordination between relevant government agencies.

Manufacturers and distributors are expected to comply with established standards, provide accurate product information and ensure that goods remain safe throughout storage and distribution.

Consumers also have a role to play by checking expiry dates, product labels, registration details and packaging before making purchases. Suspicious products should be reported to the appropriate authorities.

The call by the House of Representatives underscores the importance of protecting public health and ensuring that Nigerians have access to safe, genuine and properly regulated food products. Effective enforcement will be essential to turning the call for tougher action into meaningful results.
