The House of Representatives has taken a legislative step towards establishing a National Children’s Hospital in Ideato, Imo State, with a proposal designed to expand access to healthcare for children.

The bill, sponsored by Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North and Ideato South Federal Constituency, proposes upgrading a primary healthcare centre in Ideato into a National Children’s Hospital.

Reports published in July 2024 confirmed that the proposal passed its first reading. This marked its formal introduction in the House, rather than final passage into law.

The proposed legislation also provides for a management board to oversee the hospital, with representation from relevant government bodies, healthcare professions and the host community.

For families in Ideato and surrounding areas, a functioning children’s hospital could bring specialist care closer to home and reduce the burden of travelling long distances for treatment.

However, achieving those benefits would require more than legislation. Funding, qualified health workers, medical equipment and reliable services would be essential to making the facility effective.

The children’s hospital proposal was introduced alongside a separate bill for a National Hospital for Women in Ideato, focused on reproductive and maternal healthcare.

Together, the proposals seek to strengthen healthcare services for women and children in the area. Their practical impact will depend on completing the legislative process and securing the resources needed to deliver care.
