The House of Representatives has criticised the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) over what lawmakers described as inadequate action following the Billy gas leak incident.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the environmental and public safety implications of the leak, urging both agencies to act swiftly to contain the situation, assess its impact, and protect affected communities.

The House called for a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded accountability from all parties responsible for preventing and responding to such environmental emergencies.

Members also stressed the need for stronger regulatory oversight, timely emergency response, and stricter enforcement of safety and environmental standards within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Environmental experts noted that rapid intervention is essential in gas leak incidents to minimise risks to public health, reduce environmental damage, and restore public confidence in regulatory institutions.

The House reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that regulatory agencies fulfil their statutory responsibilities and that communities affected by environmental incidents receive adequate protection and support
