The House of Representatives has expressed support for former world boxing champion Bash Ali in his bid to stage a Guinness World Record boxing fight, while ruling out the use of public funds for the project.

Lawmakers said the initiative is commendable and has the potential to project Nigeria positively on the global sports stage, but stressed that it should be financed through private sponsorship rather than government expenditure.

Bash Ali has long campaigned for a Guinness World Record boxing bout, which he says would be held in Nigeria and attract international attention to the country’s sporting sector.

The House noted that while it supports efforts to promote sports development and international recognition, fiscal responsibility must guide any public involvement in such projects in Nigeria.

Members urged relevant stakeholders to explore private sector partnerships to make the project viable without placing additional burden on government resources.

The development comes amid broader discussions on funding priorities and the role of government in supporting sports and entertainment initiatives.

Lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sports development through sustainable and transparent funding frameworks.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
