The African Alliance Party (AAP) has responded to the registration of two new political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

On Thursday, February 5, 2026, INEC announced the addition of two political parties to the existing 19, bringing the total number of registered political parties in Nigeria to 21.

The National Chairman of AAP, Hon. Rev. Olusegun Iyaobaje Peters, urged all members nationwide to remain steadfast, calm, and focused on party activities within their states.

The AAP leadership expressed confidence that their political association will soon attain full registration as a political party. “We sincerely appreciate members who have worked tirelessly for the progress of AAP,” said Alh. Abubakar Sadiq, AAP National Publicity Secretary, in a statement.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, confirmed that the two newly approved parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The commission, however, raised concerns over the continued registration and retention of parties plagued by recurring leadership disputes, warning that persistent internal crises could threaten constitutional order.

INEC noted that the DLA successfully met the commission’s stringent verification process, while the NDC gained registration following compliance with a Federal High Court directive.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
