REFINERS EYE $329M SAVINGS FROM PROPOSED CRUDE SWAP
Nigerian refiners are expected to save about $329 million through a proposed crude oil swap arrangement aimed at improving access to feedstock and reducing the cost of refinery operations.
The proposed arrangement is expected to allow refiners to exchange crude oil for other petroleum-related products, helping them secure the feedstock needed to maintain production.
Industry stakeholders said the initiative could reduce some of the financial and logistical challenges currently affecting domestic refiners.
They noted that access to crude at competitive terms remains critical to ensuring that Nigerian refineries operate efficiently and produce petroleum products for the local market.
The proposed swap could also reduce the need for refiners to source crude through more expensive arrangements, potentially improving their operating margins.
Analysts said the savings could strengthen the competitiveness of domestic refineries and support the government’s efforts to increase local refining capacity.
They added that greater availability of locally refined petroleum products could reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imports and conserve foreign exchange.
Stakeholders stressed that the crude swap arrangement would need to be transparent and commercially viable to ensure that all participants benefit fairly.
They also called for clear contractual terms and effective regulatory oversight to prevent supply disruptions and ensure that the programme achieves its intended objectives.
The initiative comes as Nigeria continues to expand its domestic refining capacity and seeks to maximise the benefits of its crude oil resources.
Refiners said successful implementation of the proposed arrangement could improve feedstock security, reduce costs, and support more stable operations across the downstream petroleum sector.
The expected savings are seen as another potential boost for Nigeria’s refining industry as operators seek to improve efficiency and meet growing domestic demand for petroleum products.
