“REAL WOMEN WON’T TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY” — NIGERIAN DOCTOR SLAMS MEN WHO SHARE BILLS 50:50
A Nigerian medical doctor, Dr. Obianma Onyia, has sparked heated debate online after criticizing men who insist on splitting household bills equally with their wives.
In a Facebook post on Monday, September 8, 2025, the 53-year-old mother of three medical doctors said men who cannot take on most of the financial responsibilities in their homes “ought to be ashamed of themselves.”
According to her, a woman already contributes heavily by managing the home, cooking, cleaning, raising children, and providing emotional support — often while balancing her own career.
“Come o! Ndi 50:50 men, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Why are you a man if you cannot pay most of the bills?” she wrote.
Dr. Onyia argued that women already “bring a lot to the table” by keeping the family together. “That beautiful woman, even if she doesn’t have her own career, IS the table,” she emphasized.
She added that asking such women to also contribute half of their earnings is unfair and burdensome. “You want kpai pesin pikin?” she quipped in Pidgin, suggesting that such expectations are too much for women to bear.
The doctor also took a swipe at women who support the 50:50 arrangement, questioning why they would willingly carry so much load.
In her fiery post, she concluded by flipping the often-asked question back at men: “The question is and should always be: What do men bring to the table? Your third leg? Commot for road, jare.”
Her comments have since stirred intense reactions online, with some praising her for defending women’s roles in the home, while others argue that financial responsibilities should be shared fairly depending on circumstances.
