QATAR CHARITY COMMITS $10M TO INTEGRATED HOUSING SCHEME IN ABUJA
Doha-based humanitarian organisation Qatar Charity has announced a $10 million investment in an integrated housing development in Abuja as part of efforts to expand its development and social welfare activities in Nigeria. The initiative is centred on the Gaduwa housing project in the Federal Capital Territory and is designed to combine residential facilities with other services that can improve living conditions for beneficiaries. The organisation is also expanding its field operations in Abuja to support its growing development programmes across the country.
The housing project is being developed as more than a residential scheme, with a health clinic and school included as part of the facilities planned for the community. The integrated approach is intended to bring housing, healthcare and education together within the same development, reflecting Qatar Charity’s focus on longer-term interventions rather than short-term humanitarian assistance. The project is expected to provide a model that could potentially be adapted for similar community development initiatives in other parts of Nigeria.
The development was discussed during a visit by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, to Qatar Charity’s headquarters in Doha. During the meeting, Yakubu held talks with the organisation’s Executive Vice President and Global Programs Officer, Nawaf Abdullah Al-Hammadi, on ways to strengthen cooperation and expand Qatar Charity’s presence in Nigeria. Discussions also covered the organisation’s broader development programmes and the need for sustained interventions that address social and economic needs within communities.
Yakubu welcomed the housing initiative and said the Nigerian Embassy would support the organisation by helping with diplomatic clearances and coordination among relevant government agencies. He noted that housing projects could have greater impact when they are accompanied by access to basic healthcare and education. According to him, the cooperation between Nigeria and Qatar Charity could also create opportunities to extend the integrated development model beyond Abuja, subject to engagement with the appropriate authorities and stakeholders.
Qatar Charity’s expansion of its operations in Nigeria comes as the organisation continues to focus on projects aimed at supporting vulnerable communities through housing and other social services. The $10 million Gaduwa development is expected to strengthen its activities in the Federal Capital Territory while providing residential accommodation alongside essential community facilities. The initiative also adds another dimension to Nigeria-Qatar cooperation, with both sides exploring development programmes intended to deliver longer-term benefits to communities.
