PYTHON, CROCODILE, AND LION CUB FOUND IN EX-ACCOUNTANT GENERAL’S HOME IN KANO
Residents of Daneji and surrounding communities in Kano were thrown into panic after a python escaped from the home of Ahmed Idris, the former Accountant General of the Federation.
The incident led to the discovery of more wild animals — including a crocodile and a lion cub — being kept at his residence. The animals have since been safely evacuated by authorities and relocated to the Kano Zoo.
Speaking on the matter, the Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, confirmed during a radio interview on Sunday that the creatures were voluntarily handed over by Idris following the public outcry.
According to the zoo boss, the former AGF was not breaking any laws, as he possesses a valid license to keep such animals. He emphasized that while the animals were not yet a direct threat to the public, their presence understandably caused fear among residents.
“There is a Wild Animal Law that allows individuals to keep certain species, provided they are not endangered,” Muhammad explained.
“However, animals like parrots and vultures — which are considered endangered — must only be kept in zoos for preservation, not as pets.”
With the animals now under professional care at the zoo, authorities are urging residents to remain calm and assured of their safety. The incident has also sparked discussions about the need for tighter regulation and awareness around the keeping of wild animals in residential areas.
