Police in Ebonyi State have arrested a self-proclaimed prophet, Mr Nwankpu James, after a disturbing video showing him abusing a sick child accused of witchcraft went viral.

The prophet was picked up by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following public outrage over the video. In the clip, the man allegedly subjected the child to humiliating treatment and physical abuse while branding the minor a witch during what he called a deliverance session.

The abused child has been rescued and admitted to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) for immediate medical care. Officials say the child was sick and taken to the prophet by parents who could not afford proper hospital treatment.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court soon. The command condemned the act, describing it as inhuman and unacceptable.

This incident has sparked fresh anger across Nigeria, with many calling for stronger protection of children against harmful religious practices. Accusations of witchcraft against children remain a problem in some parts of the country, often leading to abuse, abandonment, or worse.

Child rights advocates have welcomed the arrest. They say it sends a strong message that no one is above the law when it comes to harming children. Many urged parents to seek medical help instead of taking sick children to unregulated prayer houses.

The Ebonyi State Police Command appealed to members of the public to report similar cases and avoid taking the law into their own hands. They also warned religious leaders against exploiting vulnerable people in the name of deliverance.

For many families in the region, this case has highlighted the need for better access to affordable healthcare and greater awareness about child rights. The rescued child is expected to receive full medical and psychological support.

Police investigations continue as authorities work to ensure justice for the child.
