“Goodnight, Doyin” – President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Journalist and MKO Abiola’s Wife

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Dr. Doyinsola Hamidat Abiola, veteran journalist and wife of late democratic icon Chief MKO Abiola. She reportedly died peacefully at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, following a brief illness.

In a heartfelt statement personally signed by the President and shared through his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Doyin Abiola as a trailblazer in journalism and a champion for gender equality whose legacy will live on for generations.

“Doyin embodied integrity, tenacity, hard work, commitment to excellence, and dedication to public good and democratic good governance,” Tinubu wrote.

The President highlighted her strong leadership in the media space, her unwavering belief in democratic values, and her lifelong work to uplift Nigerian women.

“Nigerians will never forget Doyin Abiola’s leadership during her illustrious journalism career, her championing of women’s empowerment, and her commitment to democracy,” he added.

President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Abiola and Aboaba families, especially her only daughter, Doyinsola, as well as to the governments and people of Lagos and Ogun States.

“May her soul rest in peace. May this nation be blessed with more women of Doyin Abiola’s calibre and pedigree,” the President concluded.

Dr. Doyin Abiola was a respected figure in Nigerian journalism and served as the first female editor-in-chief of a national newspaper in Nigeria. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Nigeria’s media and democratic history.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
