PRESIDENCY REJECTS LINK BETWEEN TINUBU’S EUROPEAN TRIP AND US LEGAL PROCEEDINGS

The Presidency has dismissed suggestions that President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing vacation in Europe is connected to legal proceedings involving records concerning him in the United States.

The clarification was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, amid renewed public attention surrounding legal proceedings in the United States concerning records held by American law-enforcement agencies.

Dare maintained that the President’s European trip should not be interpreted as an attempt to avoid or evade any legal process in the United States. He described attempts to connect the vacation with the ongoing proceedings as unfounded and politically motivated.

The Presidency’s position comes at a time when developments surrounding U.S. records relating to Tinubu have generated considerable public debate in Nigeria, particularly as political parties and opposition figures have raised questions about the documents and their potential implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Recent U.S. court proceedings have involved efforts to determine the status and possible disclosure of records held by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration. A recent filing by the FBI stated that the records were compiled in connection with investigations into multiple individuals for drug-trafficking offences.

The development has attracted increased political attention in Nigeria, with opposition figures and groups using the proceedings to question the President's past and his eligibility for the 2027 presidential election. The Presidency, however, has continued to reject attempts to portray the matter as evidence of wrongdoing by Tinubu.

Dare also argued that if the President had committed an offence that warranted prosecution under U.S. law, the American judicial and law-enforcement authorities would have had the opportunity to pursue such action.

The presidential aide therefore urged Nigerians to distinguish between the existence of legal proceedings concerning access to documents and any suggestion that the President himself is currently facing criminal prosecution in the United States.

The controversy intensified after reports emerged that Tinubu’s legal team had approached a U.S. court seeking to prevent or restrict the release of certain records. The matter has since become a major subject of political discussion in Nigeria, with different political actors offering sharply contrasting interpretations of the legal proceedings.

The Presidency has maintained that the President’s actions should not be interpreted through the lens of political speculation, insisting that his European vacation was planned independently of the U.S. court developments.

The administration has also continued to focus on its domestic agenda, including economic reforms and preparations for the next phase of governance as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.

The latest clarification is expected to further fuel political debate over the U.S. proceedings, particularly as opposition parties continue to demand greater transparency over records connected to the President.

For now, the Presidency insists that there is no connection between Tinubu’s European vacation and the U.S. legal proceedings, describing attempts to establish such a link as misleading.
