POWER ROTATION ROW: ATIKU’S AIDE SLAMS TINUBU’S SPOKESMAN
A fresh political clash has erupted over power rotation ahead of the 2027 elections, as an aide to Atiku Abubakar criticised comments by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga had argued that President Bola Tinubu should complete two terms, insisting the South should retain power until 2031 following the tenure of Muhammadu Buhari.
Reacting, Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, rejected the position, describing it as anti-democratic and unconstitutional.
Shaibu argued that power rotation is a political convention, not a constitutional requirement, stressing that no individual or group has the authority to dictate Nigeria’s leadership based on region.
He further accused the Presidency of hypocrisy and attempting to suppress opposition voices, insisting that leaders are elected and can be voted out by citizens.
The exchange highlights growing political tensions ahead of 2027, with debates intensifying over zoning, governance performance, and the future direction of Nigeria’s democracy.
