POWER BLACKOUTS HIT LAGOS, OSUN AS TRANSMISSION FAILURES, FLOODING DISRUPT SUPPLY

Residents of Lagos and Osun states are experiencing prolonged power outages following multiple transmission infrastructure failures compounded by recent flooding across parts of the country.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that several high-voltage lines were affected by technical faults and flood-

induced damage, leading to load-shedding and total blackouts in affected areas. In Lagos, key distribution companies reported widespread disruptions, particularly in Ikeja, Eko, and some suburban regions, while Osun communities also faced extended darkness.

Engineers are working round the clock to restore affected lines, but restoration timelines remain uncertain due to the extent of damage and ongoing rains. The TCN urged consumers to exercise patience as emergency repairs continue.

Power sector stakeholders attributed the recurring incidents to ageing infrastructure, inadequate maintenance, and the impact of climate change on critical assets. Experts have renewed calls for accelerated investment in transmission capacity and flood-resilient designs.

The outages have disrupted businesses, affected healthcare services, and increased reliance on costly alternative power sources. Residents appealed to the government and relevant agencies to prioritise urgent upgrades to the national grid to prevent future occurrences.

The development highlights the vulnerability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure to both technical and environmental challenges.
