POVERTY THREATENS 79% OF NIGERIANS DESPITE REFORMS – WORLD BANK
The World Bank has warned that poverty continues to threaten 79% of Nigerians despite ongoing economic reforms, highlighting the urgent need for more targeted interventions to improve living standards.
In its latest assessment, the global lender noted that while some macroeconomic indicators have shown signs of stabilisation, the impact on ordinary citizens remains limited. High inflation, rising cost of living, and limited job opportunities continue to push a large portion of the population below the poverty line.
The World Bank stressed that without deliberate policies focused on job creation, social protection, and inclusive growth, the benefits of reforms may not trickle down to the most vulnerable groups. It called for accelerated investment in education, healthcare, and agricultural productivity to address the root causes of poverty.
Stakeholders have urged the government to prioritise programmes that directly support low-income households and promote economic opportunities in both urban and rural areas. The report serves as a reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria as it navigates a complex reform agenda.
The World Bank expressed willingness to continue supporting Nigeria’s efforts to reduce poverty and build a more resilient economy.
