PORTUGUESE FA DEFENDS RONALDO OVER ABSENCE AT JOTA’S FUNERAL
Cristiano Ronaldo Didn't Attend Jota’s Funeral – Portuguese FA Says Criticism Is Unfair
The Portuguese Football Association (FA) has spoken out in defense of Cristiano Ronaldo, who faced backlash for not attending the funeral of his late teammate, Diogo Jota.
Although several national team players — including Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, and Bernardo Silva — were present at the ceremony, Ronaldo was notably absent, prompting public criticism and questions about his loyalty.
However, FA President Pedro Proenca has clarified the situation, saying Ronaldo’s decision was misunderstood and that his absence was out of respect, not disregard.
“What they said about our captain is unfair,” Proenca said.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the people who felt it the most, especially because he was a true team-mate of Jota.”
Ronaldo is believed to have chosen not to attend in person so that his high-profile presence wouldn’t overshadow the solemn occasion, allowing the event to remain focused on Jota and his family.
Proenca emphasized that Ronaldo has always stood by the national team like family — even in painful moments.
“His physical absence means nothing more than that, because he never abandoned this family,” he added.
Ronaldo has not publicly responded to the criticism but reportedly paid tribute to Jota privately.
The tragic passing of Diogo Jota, who died unexpectedly, has sent shockwaves through the football world, with tributes pouring in globally from clubs, teammates, and fans.
