PORT AGENTS ENDORSE GREEN TAX SURCHARGE TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE SHIPPING

Clearing agents and maritime operators at Nigeria’s ports have thrown their support behind the proposed Green Tax Surcharge aimed at promoting environmental sustainability in the shipping industry.

The initiative, which seeks to impose a levy on vessels based on their environmental performance, is designed to encourage the adoption of cleaner technologies and reduce carbon emissions from port activities. Agents believe the surcharge will incentivise shipping lines to invest in greener vessels and practices, ultimately benefiting the environment and long-term port efficiency.

Stakeholders at a recent stakeholders’ meeting noted that the move aligns with global trends towards decarbonisation in maritime transport. They emphasised the need for transparent implementation and utilisation of collected funds for green infrastructure projects at the ports.

While some operators raised concerns about potential short-term cost implications, the majority agreed that the long-term benefits of a cleaner and more sustainable port environment outweigh the challenges. The Nigerian Ports Authority has assured stakeholders of stakeholder consultation before full rollout.

The endorsement reflects growing awareness and commitment within the maritime community to support environmental initiatives while maintaining operational competitiveness.
