The Lagos State Police Command has announced that Shamsideen Adio, a prominent National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leader popularly known as Shameleon, will be arraigned in court on Friday for the alleged murder of a dispatch rider.

Adio, 55, was arrested following a violent altercation on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on September 17, 2025, which ended in the death of the rider.

According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation started when the dispatch rider reportedly blocked Adio’s vehicle. The situation escalated quickly, with Adio and his associates allegedly attacking the rider.

In a disturbing video circulating online, Adio was seen punching the rider repeatedly while a friend joined in the assault, as bystanders watched without intervening. Witnesses said the victim was beaten with a helmet and fists until he collapsed. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he later died from his injuries.

Confirming the development, Lagos Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Bababseyi Oluseyi, disclosed that Adio is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, and will be arraigned on Friday.

The gruesome incident has sparked outrage across Lagos, with both civil society and lawmakers demanding justice.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has also intervened, insisting that Adio and his accomplices must face full prosecution. Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, Adewale Adedeji, condemned the act in strong terms.

“As the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation, I say clearly that Shamsideen’s action is barbaric, shameful, inhuman, and heartbreaking. He must be prosecuted to the logical end,” Adedeji declared.

He further urged the leadership of the NURTW in Lagos, led by Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha Seigo, to suspend Adio immediately and distance the union from such “lawless behavior.”

“The NURTW should be a professional union, not a safe haven for members who disregard human life and dignity,” Adedeji added.

Adio’s arraignment is expected to test the resolve of authorities to tackle violence often associated with the transport union in Lagos.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
