The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered and neutralised explosive devices within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre following a coordinated security operation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement released on Monday in Uyo.

She said the recovery helped avert a possible tragedy at the custodial facility.

According to her, the breakthrough followed credible intelligence from correctional authorities concerning suspicious items discovered around the centre.

Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, ordered the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.

The police spokesperson said a coordinated search and sweep operation led to the recovery of two 90mm high explosive rounds and a 45cm length of burning fuse.

She added that officers also recovered one pair of pincers, one flat screwdriver, two pieces of 12mm iron chisels, and one 6cm conduit iron pipe.

“The EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, thereby neutralising any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure,” she said.

John said the command had strengthened security around the correctional facility and surrounding areas through increased surveillance, access control, and continuous patrols.

She added that discreet investigations and technical analysis had commenced to determine the source of the explosives and identify those responsible.

The police assured residents that the situation was fully under control and that no casualties were recorded.

She urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The command also warned criminal elements that it would not tolerate attempts to threaten public safety or attack critical institutions.

John reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
