Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have recovered a cache of 912 rounds of B32 API (7.62 x 51mm) ammunition hidden in the Kumshe Jamba Mari area of Maiduguri, the state capital.

The discovery was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso. He said the ammunition has been secured while investigations are ongoing to determine its source and intended use.

According to the statement, the recovery was made on January 4, 2026, at about 2:00 pm, following credible intelligence received by the Divisional Police Officer of Lamisula Division. Acting on the information, the DPO led a team of operatives to the area, where the hidden cache was uncovered.

Daso explained that standard operational procedures were immediately activated, with the Department of Explosive Ordnance Disposal deployed to the scene. The area was professionally cordoned off to ensure public safety before the ammunition was safely recovered.

He added that efforts are ongoing to trace those responsible for concealing the ammunition and to establish what it was intended for.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, commended members of the public for providing timely and useful intelligence, noting that such cooperation has continued to support security operations across the state.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or activities within their communities.

The recovery comes days after troops of Operation Hadin Kai also uncovered a separate cache of arms-related items, including 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition and power banks concealed inside a drainage in the Bulumkutu area of Maiduguri, highlighting ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons in Borno State.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
