POLICE PROBE DEATH OF OFFICER ALLEGEDLY KILLED BY CONVOY IN ENUGU
The Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a police inspector, Dr. Obodo Paul Ikechukwu, who was allegedly knocked down by a police convoy in the state.
He deceased, a Doctor of Philosophy holder, hailed from Nkpologu, Enugu State and was serving in the Operations Department at the command headquarters. It was gathered that the incident took place along New Haven/Bisala road around 7pm on July 5, 2026.
According to eyewitness account, he was going to work on that fateful evening when he was knocked down by the convoy as soon as he alighted from a commercial bus. Eye witnesses said the convoy that knocked him down sped off, dragging his body for some distance.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the tragic death of the inspector in a statement on Tuesday, but denied the involvement of a police convoy in the incident.
Ndukwe noted that the clarification became crucial following what he described as misleading social media reports alleging that the high-ranking officer was crushed by a police convoy.
While the command spokesman did not disclose the exact time and specific location where the fatal accident occurred, he assured the public that the incident was being actively investigated.
He stated that the police would communicate further details to the public as the investigation progressed.
Mourning the late officer, Ndukwe described the incident as tragic and pledged a meticulous inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death.
He said: “Losing a police officer or any other person in such circumstances is deeply disheartening and must be thoroughly investigated. However, there is no evidence establishing that a police convoy was involved in the fatal hit-and-run motor-pedestrian accident at this time.”
