The Nigeria Police Force has presented N22.3 million in cheques to the families of 16 officers who died in active service in Benue State.

The presentation took place on Friday in Makurdi, with the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ifeanyi Emenari, urging beneficiaries to use the funds judiciously.

Emenari explained that the money was drawn from the police welfare schemes, Group Life Assurance, and Group Accident benefits. Represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Mohammed Yakubu, the commissioner extended condolences to the families, noting that while funds cannot replace the lives lost, the support would cushion the impact of the deaths during the first year.

He advised families to invest the funds in businesses to become self-reliant while awaiting other entitlements from the force.

“I take this opportunity to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice made by our brave police officers who gave their lives in service to our dear country. We recognise your loss and assure you that your loved ones’ service will not be forgotten,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Happiness Sale thanked the force for its continued support to personnel even after death.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
