POLICE NO DIFFERENT FROM BOKO HARAM – JOURNALIST FISAYO SOYOMBO ALLEGES AFTER ASSAULT
Nigerian investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has raised serious concerns about police brutality, likening the Nigerian Police Force to terrorist groups such as Boko Haram.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Soyombo shared a chilling account of an alleged assault on a journalist by officers attached to the Ikeja Police Command in Lagos State.
He revealed that during the assault, one officer allegedly threatened to kill the journalist and cover it up.
“If the officers of the Ikeja Command can tell a journalist while assaulting him: ‘I will cut off your neck now… you will die here, and the autopsy will show asthma killed you — not police brutality,’ only God knows what they do to other civilians behind closed doors,” Soyombo wrote.
The journalist condemned the police for failing to learn lessons from the #EndSARS protests of 2020, stressing that Nigerians continue to face daily harassment and intimidation.
“Despite all the learnings they should have taken from 2020 #EndSARS, the police continue to terrorise Nigerians every day. For this reason, the police in my eyes are no different from any other terrorist group. They’re no different from Boko Haram, bandits, IPOB or herdsmen if you strip them of their uniforms and their constitutional backing. A stench-filled institution from the very top to its bottom!”
Soyombo’s remarks have since sparked strong reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing frustrations about police misconduct and the urgent need for reform.
