The Niger State Police Command has arrested seven suspects for alleged illegal mining and vandalism at Gurara Waterfalls in Gurara Local Government Area.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed this in a statement issued in Minna, noting that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public property across Niger State.

According to him, the suspects were apprehended on March 22 during a sting operation conducted by operatives attached to the Gawu-Babangida Division, following reports of illegal activities at the tourist site.

He explained that the suspects, aged between 27 and 40, were traced to areas within Abuja and Niger State, adding that several items used for illegal mining were recovered during the operation.

Recovered exhibits included water pump engines, shovels, diggers, pipes, carpets, and head pans, all believed to have been used in carrying out the illegal activities.

Abiodun further revealed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further investigation.

He added that the command had earlier conducted a similar raid at the same location on March 17, during which eight suspects were arrested, and additional mining tools were recovered.

The police spokesperson emphasised that the command remains committed to sustaining its crackdown on illegal mining and vandalism, warning that offenders will continue to face the full weight of the law.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
