POLICE MOURN RETIRED AIG, CP

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the deaths of retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde and Commissioner of Police Hassan Saleh Gwani.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force described both officers as dedicated personnel who served the Force with professionalism and commitment.

According to the statement, Olatunde died at his residence in Lagos on July 23, while Gwani passed away on July 19 at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment after a brief illness.

The Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Force extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased officers.

“The leadership of the Force conveys its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the departed officers, commending their selfless service and honour to the nation,” the statement read.

The police prayed for the repose of their souls and for strength for their families to bear the losses.

“The Nigeria Police Force prays that Almighty God grants their souls eternal rest and gives their families the fortitude to bear these irreplaceable losses,” it added.

The police said Olatunde joined the Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and served for more than 33 years before retiring as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations on November 3, 2025.

During his career, he held several command and operational positions in Abia, Lagos, Osun and Benue State commands, as well as at the Force Headquarters.

His appointments included Divisional Police Officer in Ikire, Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations at the Western Port Authority, Lagos, Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, and AIG Operations.

The statement added that the late retired AIG is survived by his wife and children.

The Force also said Gwani, a native of Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, was born on November 11, 1970, and enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on November 10, 1997.

According to the police, he served in several strategic positions during his nearly three decades in the Force before his death in Egypt.

The statement noted that his burial was conducted in Cairo in accordance with Islamic rites.
