The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Police Command have agreed to strengthen their collaboration to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal, illegal activities at dumpsites, and attacks on waste management personnel across the state.

The partnership was discussed when LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, visited the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, at the police command in Ikeja.

Gbadegesin said Lagos generates between 13,000 and 16,000 tonnes of waste daily, putting significant pressure on the state’s waste management infrastructure. He called for stronger enforcement and inter-agency cooperation to address illegal dumping and other environmental violations.

He also raised concerns about the safety of LAWMA officers, street sweepers, and other personnel who sometimes face resistance while carrying out their duties.

The Commissioner of Police assured LAWMA of the command’s support in enforcing environmental regulations, tackling illegal dumping and encroachment at dumpsites, and protecting waste management facilities and personnel.

Both agencies said the collaboration would help promote a cleaner and safer Lagos while ensuring that environmental offenders are held accountable.
