Tension erupted on Tuesday at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, as two opposing factions of the party clashed, forcing police officers to fire teargas to restore order.

According to reports, chaos broke out when Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, and members of the faction loyal to newly elected PDP National Chairman Kabiru Turaki arrived at the secretariat.

Their entry was fiercely resisted by supporters aligned with Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who attempted to block access to the building, triggering confrontations between both groups.

Security operatives believed to be loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, along with police officers on ground, engaged in a tense standoff with Makinde and Mohammed’s camp. The situation escalated, prompting police to fire teargas to disperse the growing crowd.

While Makinde managed to enter the premises alongside the newly elected National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, Wike—who also arrived at the secretariat—remained inside his vehicle for over 30 minutes without stepping out, observing the unfolding unrest.

After the situation was contained, Governors Makinde and Mohammed addressed journalists, narrating the events and confirming the deployment of teargas by security agents during the confrontation.

To restore normalcy, the police eventually ordered all party members, supporters, and loyalists to vacate the PDP headquarters.

The clash adds to the ongoing leadership tussle within the PDP, with factions led by Kabiru Turaki and Samuel Anyanwu battling for control of the party’s national structure.
