POLICE DENY DEMANDING ₦600,000 FOR SUSPECT’S RELEASE IN ANAMBRA

The Anambra State Police Command has denied allegations that it demanded ₦600,000 from the sister of a wanted suspect in exchange for her release.

The command said the woman, identified as Nwosu Chikamso Jennifer, was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into cult-related killings in Awka.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Jennifer was arrested after investigators established that she was aware of efforts to apprehend her brother, Nwosu Kenechukwu, and allegedly helped him evade arrest.

The police described reports that she was arrested solely because of her relationship with her brother as misleading.

Ikenga also categorically denied that the police demanded ₦600,000 or any other payment as a condition for her release.

He said Jennifer was later granted bail under established police procedures after agreeing to cooperate with investigators and assist in efforts to locate her brother, who remains a person of interest.

The command urged media organisations and members of the public to verify sensitive allegations before publication, particularly where such claims could affect ongoing investigations.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to due process and professional policing.
